Panel facilitator Margo Wiggins opened the discussion with this question. "Where do you see the publishing industry headed in terms of African-American literature?"

Let's listen, and learn.

Protecting Yourself Against Assault: Self-Protection & Injury Prevention

If you're living by the phrase “be aware of your surroundings,” you're living dangerously. It can contribute to you becoming a victim of assault. Replace the phrase “be aware of your surroundings” with the phrase “be aware of your environment.” The word “surroundings” evokes feelings of confinement and limited control of your space. It makes for a nervous and fearful way of living. It also contributes to victim posturing, i.e., head down, slumped shoulders, and nervous eye contact, if eye contact is made.

Being aware of your environment makes you more relaxed and alert. You start paying attention to what's going on around you, which makes you less of a target, more effective when defending yourself, and better at remembering detail. The language you use regarding your protection and safety impacts how you will respond when protecting and defending yourself in the event of an assault, or an emergency of any kind.

The Selfprotection Tai-She seminar shown in this video focuses on self-protection and injury prevention— the first steps to take when learning self-defense.
