Civil Rights at 50: Celebrating the Passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Civil Rights at 50 - The Equal Justice Society celebrated the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center For The Arts on September 13, 2014. The Act was the most sweeping civil rights legislation since Reconstruction and prohibits discrimination of all kinds based on race, color, religion, or national origin. The law also provides the federal government with the powers to enforce desegregation. Earlier in 1964, the 24th amendment abolished the poll tax, originally instituted in 11 southern states to make it difficult for blacks to vote. Equal Justice Society President and founder Eva Paterson and others were honored.

Watch, and listen to how far America has come regarding issues of race, and how far it has to go. Tune in!

Oscar Micheaux: America's First Black Film Director

Dr. J.D. Walker is a producer, screenwriter, and director who has been teaching the Harlem Renaissance Movement on the collegiate level for over 15 years. A former journalist and actress with an extensive background in marketing, publishing, and book buying, Walker also teaches courses in Independent African American Cinema, Documentary Making, and Women, Race, Class, and Sexuality.

She became fascinated with the silent films of Oscar Micheaux while teaching his works and sought to collect all of the films and memorabilia about him that she could find to share with her students. Walker always wanted to tell Oscar Micheaux's story in film and began working on both a screenplay and a book about his leading women while she was teaching. Her short film titled The Young Oscar Micheaux was the Pitching Contest winner at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Walker's first feature script, The Postwoman, earned Honorable Mention in the Sundance Read My Screenplay Contest.

I interviewed Dr. Walker three days before she attended the San Francisco Black Film Festival where her film was showcased. The world is going to see and hear a lot about Jamie. I was impressed.

African Americans of San Francisco

San Jose City College faculty member Jan Batiste Adkins' book African Americans of San Francisco is a breath of fresh air because she focuses on what Blacks have contributed to the greatness of San Francisco. In the story-telling of Blacks here in this country and around the world, the focus is almost always on the pathology and the struggles of Black culture. That kind of story-telling is a cash cow for Hollywood. Jan's book is important for all to read and I think it's especially important for young Black boys and girls who'll have the opportunity to see themselves in lights that are positive, powerful, and HISTORICAL. There's another cash cow on the market now and I hope Jan's book makes a mint.
